Women’s Month: Esther Sampson

I am the External Relations Manager at United Through Sport. I focus on monitoring, evaluation and learning, fundraising and communications. I am passionate about using sport as a tool to create lasting change in individual’s lives, contributing to the development of whole communities.

Knowing that I am contributing to the change and development of children and youth. It is amazing to see how sport can give youth access to opportunities that they would not otherwise be able to access. I am motivated by being part of each child’s journey, seeing them reach their full potential!

My mom is my role model. She has taught me so much throughout my life. One thing that sticks out to me is that you can achieve whatever you put your mind to. She has always been my constant encourager and I am grateful for her support. She has also taught me that you are never too old to learn something new, I love her adventurous spirit and her willingness to try anything.

Coming from playing a male-dominated sport in university, I think that women aren’t given the same opportunities as men even when they compete at the same level. I think the problem is two-fold, women not demanding the visibility we deserve in sport and society not valuing women’s sport equally. Females in the sporting space need to take on the role with confidence, remembering that we are paving the way for the next generation of female athletes. A great example of women stepping into the space with confidence is the US Women’s National Soccer Team.

Watch female sport, support female players and encourage others to do the same. To create lasting change, we need everyone to be involved.

There’s never going to be a precisely right moment to speak, share an idea, or take a chance. Just take the moment—don’t let thoughts like ‘I don’t feel like I’m ready’ get in the way or the opportunity will pass you by.

Don’t let the lack of visibility of women in the industry stand in your way. If you are passionate about sport, get involved and recognize that getting into the industry will provide young girls with someone to aspire to.

Step into your passion, it will all work out in the end.

I am focused on changing one life at a time through the power of sport. While focused on individual change, I am striving to add evidence to this space, showing how sport can create lasting change in individual’s lives, in communities, and throughout the country.
