Schaffhausen, Switzerland, October 3, 2022 – Three youngsters from Laureus Sport for Good programmes in Spain, South Africa and Brazil, have had their designs selected for the final round of the 2022 IWC Watch Drawing Competition.
Voting begins today on Laureus.com and is open until October 21. The winner – announced on October 26 –will receive a special meeting with a Laureus Academy Member or Ambassador, and their Sport for Good programme will receive a substantial donation to assist with their work.
This competition is an annual collaboration between Laureus Sport for Good and IWC Schaffhausen, global partners since 2005, and this year’s theme was ‘Time For The Planet’, a focus on the environment and climate change. Laureus Sport for Good programmes use the power of sport to help young people overcome violence, discrimination and disadvantage – as exemplified by our finalists this year.
Twelve-year-old Gema attends the Rafa Nadal Foundation in Palma, Spain, which cares for 250 vulnerable young people and their families each year, using sport to foster educational values such as team spirit, respect and effort.
Leah , nine, is part of HealthNutz, the Laureus-supported project in Cape Town, South Africa, where young children from previously under-served communities develop gross and fine motor skills by participating in play.
Our third finalist is Joao Paulo , a 13-year-old participant in Bola Pra Frente, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, a project that uses sport and cultural literacy to develop socio-emotional skills and citizenship in its community.
Chris Grainger-Herr, CEO of IWC Schaffhausen, said: “Our partnership with Laureus reflects our commitment to drive societal change and support young people, and the annual drawing competition has been a cornerstone of our collaboration since 2006. At IWC, we are deeply impressed by the creativity the young participants put into their drawings, and we look forward to crowning a winner in the 2022 IWC Drawing Competition.”
Sean Fitzpatrick, All Blacks rugby legend and Chairman of Laureus Sport for Good, said:
“These youngsters have shown incredible creative talent with their entries to this competition. The topic, ‘Time for the Planet’ couldn’t be more important in today’s world, and I’m proud that both Laureus Sport for Good and IWC are committed to using our collective platform to advocate for climate issues.
“On behalf of the Laureus Academy, I’d like to thank IWC for their incredible and ongoing support for Laureus and congratulate Gema, Leah and Joao on their wonderful designs. The Laureus programmes they are a part of represent the fantastic work that IWC Schaffhausen have supported for the past 17 years, and their continued support is invaluable to Laureus in its mission to change the world through the power of sport.”
